POLYPHONY IN THE CODEX CALIXTINUS

INTRODUCTION
We will attempt to delve into the Middle Ages and, for one hour, transport ourselves to the 12th century to learn about the customs, mentality, iconography, and, of course, the music, through one of the most beautiful and essential sources for the history of Western music: the Codex Calixtinus. We will begin with a brief overview of the broad historical and social context surrounding the creation and compilation of the codex, before immediately delving into the volume itself and discovering its physical characteristics, its authors, its themes…
Later we will focus our attention on the music it contains, and finally, as if using a magnifying glass, so beloved by the paleographer, we will examine the polyphonic pieces preserved in this excellent source.
These four increasingly localized perspectives will structure this day, like a sketch, as we have already seen in the initial index. I hope they will provide the most complete overview possible (in just a few strokes) that helps to understand the scope and value of this splendid work of art.
