Book II Chapter II
EXAMPLE OF JAMES WRITTEN BY SAINT BEDE, PRIEST AND DOCTOR
Of the man whose sin was erased by divine decree on the altar of Santiago.
In the time of the blessed Theodomir, Bishop of Compostela, there lived an Italian who scarcely dared to confess to his priest and parish priest a great misdeed he had once committed. Upon hearing this, the parish priest, terrified by such a grave sin, did not dare to impose penance; but moved by compassion, he sent the sinner to the tomb of Saint James with a note on which his sin was written, ordering him to implore with all his heart the help of the holy Apostle and to submit to the judgment of the bishop of the apostolic basilica. Without delay, then, he went to Santiago in Galicia, and upon its venerable altar, repenting of having committed such a great offense and begging forgiveness of God and the Apostle with sobs and tears, on Saint James's Day, that is, July 25th, at first light, he placed the handwritten confession.
