Codex Calixtinus of the University of Salamanca

246 pages of 331 x 245 mm, in Gothic book type.

In its entirety, the codex is a diverse compilation of texts by copyists and poets, musicians, storytellers and fabulists, even theologians, written in the first half of the 12th century, preceded by a letter from Pope Callixtus II, followed by five books.

Probably copied in Spain, in Santiago de Compostela, the one traditionally known as the Calixtinus of Salamanca is one of the very rare complete copies of the Liber Sancti Jacobi, a first-rate source for a better understanding of the various pilgrimage routes, both Spanish and French, which goes further and summarizes traditions and promotes devotion to the Apostle James.

The Salamanca Codex is a richly decorated work, as evidenced not only by its evocative images but also by the numerous initials and capitals adorned with exquisitely crafted flourishes and internal designs. This precious collection, brimming with enigmas and mysteries, is a truly unique work that reveals a wealth of insights into medieval history.
