Aimeric Picaud. Edited by María José García Blanco. Alvarellos Publishing House.

Considered the first travel guide to Europe, it returns to bookstores in paperback. The publisher Alvarellos has brought back the most attractive and popular text of the Codex Calixtinus, he Book V, Written in the mid-12th century, this work, possibly by a French monk named Aimeric Picaud, recounts the places, monuments, and people he encountered on his pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago, as well as describing the city of Santiago de Compostela and, of course, the cathedral itself, at a time when the Pórtico de la Gloria (Portico of Glory) had not yet been built. The text is divided into eleven chapters, and this edition, prepared by Professor María José Blanco of the University of Santiago, includes nearly 300 explanatory notes and practical indexes of people and places mentioned. This edition, available in Spanish, is based on the 1951 translation from the original Latin by Abelardo Moralejo, with the assistance of Casimiro Torres and Julio Feo. In this way, the book represents a way of approaching what the Camino de Santiago and the pilgrimages were like nine centuries ago, since the objective of the author of this first guide in Europe was "that the pilgrims who go to Santiago can anticipate, with this information, the expenses necessary for their journey.".

You can purchase this item in our online store: https://codexcalixtinus.es/producto/libro-v-guia-del-peregrino-medieval-traduccion-al-castellano/

Are you interested in the Codex Calixtinus? See the facsimile edition of the Iacobus Codex Calixtinus and the Spanish translation of Book V in the Club store.

Aimeric Picaud.
