In 1840, the British Museum in London purchased this beautiful Beatus of Liébana. The codex had been copied in the scriptorium of the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, from which it derives its most common name in the classification of illuminated manuscripts.

It is one of the best-preserved Beatus manuscripts of Liébana, despite its eventful and colorful history. It is known that in the 18th century it belonged to Cardinal Antonio de Aragón, who donated it to the College of San Bartolomé in Salamanca. From there, when such colleges were suppressed, it passed to the Royal Library of Madrid. It is believed that Joseph Bonaparte stole it from there when he was King of Spain, and later sold it by him to the British Museum, when he was merely the Count of Survilliers.
